This is a wonderful large vintage Christmas putz church, a charming early mid-century holiday decoration featuring a snowy blue church with steeple, pinecone trees, and mica-style glitter accents. The church is made of cardboard/paperboard with yellow cellophane “glass” windows, a snow-covered roof, bottle-brush and pinecone trees, and frosted detailing. The original light hole remains at the back for optional illumination. The textured paint and glitter create a wonderful “snowy cottage” effect typical of early putz houses.
This large church design is less common than the small houses, making it an especially desirable piece for collectors.
Age: late 1940s to early 1950s
Origin: unmarked, but most likely Japan, possibly American
Measurements
Base: 10 1/2\" x 8\"
Height (to top of steeple): 9 1/2\"
Condition: In good condition with expected age-appropriate wear, including scattered flaking to the paint/glitter finish (especially to the top of the steeple) and natural ageing to the paperboard, all consistent with its early mid-century manufacture. There is something missing in one spot (see last close-up photo), likely a pinecone or tree - you can easily put something of your own desire there. Finally, there is a branch that is leaning on the steeple - you would need to straighten this. Displays beautifully with authentic vintage charm.
This is a wonderful large vintage Christmas putz church — perfect for a vintage Christmas décor!
