HOT ! Vintage German Belsnickel 17 inch

An enduring classic, this heirloom piece not only makes a majestic focal point for holiday displays, but is also steeped in fascinating lore.  Don\'t let that sweet face fool you. Intricately carved details shows a sterner brow expression than your average Santa. Traditions are peppered with colorful characters and in Germany, the ornery Belsnickel would visit children alongside Saint Nicholas to address those who needed to correct their behavior. Often clad in rags and patchwork, sometimes donning a mask to appear more fearsome, he carried candy or treats for the obedient children along with switches for those who had been misbehaving. Naughty children were made to do a penance such as recite a Bible verse or poem for forgiveness. Traditionally in Germany, St. Nicholas’ Day is December 6th when St. Nicholas and the Belsnickel visit so that all will be ready for Christmas.
