HOT ! Antique Edwardian Albert Chain Necklace Silver 18ct Gold Gilt With Medallion

A grand antique Edwardian Albert chain, made up of solid silver curb links that graduate in size toward the middle. Each is stamped with a sterling Lion mark and has been gilded in a bright 18ct yellow gold. The Albert has been converted into a necklace over time and is complete with one of its original claw clasps and a large, engraved shield medallion suspended from the bottom.   

Albert chains were popularised and named after Prince Albert, Queen Victoria’s consort in the 19th Century and were traditionally worn by gentlemen to secure a pocket watch to the buttonhole of a waistcoat. Today, they are also worn as stylish necklaces; a custom that was started by the wives of soldiers during the First World War who wore the chains as a keepsake.

This is a solid Edwardian Albert chain, with a good weight and beautiful yellow gold bloom. It’s complete with the maker’s mark (H.B.) and Birmingham hallmarks on the medallion and clasp, dating it to 1905.
