Babaru—the Japanese word for “bubble”—is a fitting name for this platinum Ethiopian opal and diamond pendant. Acquired from a Japanese estate and imported directly, the piece reflects the refined balance often seen in modern Japanese jewelry: precise, intentional, and quietly luminous.
At its center rests a 5.20 carat oval Ethiopian “jelly” opal from the Wollo Province. The stone’s crystal-clear body carries a subtle warmth beneath the surface, while green and blue fire move fluidly throughout. In brighter light, flashes of red, yellow, and violet emerge unexpectedly, giving the opal a sense of depth and motion. Its transparency allows the color to feel suspended within the stone—like light caught inside a rising bubble.
A platinum halo of thirty-two round diamonds frames the opal, with three additional diamonds set into the bail above, for a total diamond weight of approximately 0.33 carats. With SI clarity and near-colorless I–J tones, the diamonds provide soft brilliance that enhances rather than competes with the opal. The cool tone of platinum further emphasizes the opal’s luminous character while offering lasting structural strength.
From the top of the diamond-accented bail to the base of the pendant, the piece measures approximately one inch in length and half an inch in width—graceful in proportion yet noticeable when worn. The reverse is hallmarked with the opal’s carat weight, total diamond weight, and platinum purity, a detail characteristic of Japanese craftsmanship and transparency.
Modern in origin and preserved in excellent estate condition, Babaru offers refined radiance in an elegant, wearable scale—subtle enough for daily sophistication, luminous enough for evening.
18” sterling silver box-style presentation chain included.
To keep your Ethiopian opal jewelry in its best possible condition, we recommend keeping it away from water. Remove Ethiopian opal necklaces before bathing or swimming.
